Youth In Transition (YIT), a non-profit 501-C3 agency, is a first response and triage agency for homeless & at-risk youth and young adults in Albuquerque, New Mexico providing basic human, social, physical and spiritual needs in a unorthodox, yet supportive environment.
YIT gives hope to street youth who have fallen through the cracks of traditional social services systems and have nowhere else to turn. We offer services that fill in the gap for those who cannot/will not access or distrust other services.
These kids come from difficult domestic situations: throwaways (parental rejection), runaways, outcasts (gay/lesbian/illness), abused (sexual, physical, emotional), family issues (substance abuse, violence, neglect).
We do not judge them on their pasts...but we do hold them responsible for their present actions while guiding them and showing them alternatives. YIT considers itself to be "impact" oriented rather than "goal" or "success" oriented. Maybe "Jim" didn't have to steal anything today, because he got something to eat from YIT. Maybe "Tina" only smoked "dope" once today, because she felt better about herself.
We provide limited case-management support (helping with SSI/disability claims, payee services, referrals, budgeting & life-skills training, school enrollment, mailing address & phone number, transportation to/from appointments, etc.)
YIT receives no government funding, allowing us to remain flexible and provide a "no-strings-attached, open-door, open-arms" approach while serving some of Albuquerque's most in-need youth.
